What is good design in a digital product?
Look and feel are very important, but is it effective for the user? Does it engage and delight them, encouraging them to return? Does it make sense? Is information easy to find? Does it evolve? It is successful from the business perspective? Am I asking too many questions?
It can do all of these things, but perhaps not initially.
As a designer of digital products, I advocate for using Design Thinking (and UX) methodologies in order to improve the user experience, contributing to a more successful digital product.
Design Thinking methods and strategies belong at every level of the design process. However, Design Thinking is not an exclusive property of designers — all great innovators in literature, art, music, science, engineering, and business have practiced it. What’s special about Design Thinking is that the designer's work processes can help us systematically extract, teach, learn, and apply these human-centered techniques in solving problems in creative and innovative ways.
The process involves ongoing experimentation: sketching, prototyping, testing, and trying out concepts and ideas. It is a fluid process where at every stage there are opportunities to stop, revisit previous decisions, adjust to better understand the problems facing users and ensure the designed solution you’re introducing is the right one. The heart of Design Thinking is the intention to improve products by analyzing and understanding how users interact with products.
